2016
NDIA annual report
National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA)
CHALLENGES
The 2015-2016 Financial year was the final year of trial before the full rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) began. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) administers the Scheme and needed to capture their key activities and achievements for the year along with meeting government reporting requirements.
Grindstone was engaged to oversee the full project of the annual report – from project management, research and report writing to design, print specifications and development of an online version of the report.
STRATEGY
Grindstone’s team of content writers and project managers collaborated with the NDIA Governance team and Agency subject matter experts to collate source material that would form the structure of the report.
A narrative theme ‘Towards an Ordinary Life’ and document structure was developed to improve the readability and ease of navigation within the content of the report.
Grindstone’s aim was to report on the key achievements of the previous year whilst also providing a simplified and explanatory overview of the Scheme for the full trial period.
Due to the complex nature of the Agency, the Scheme and the various audiences it engages, consideration was given to simplifying, wherever possible, the content and design of the report to ensure it was accessible to all. Key to this was the form in which the final report was made available. Versions were developed in print, accessible PDF, plain and Easy English as well as a WCAG 2.0 AA standard online version to ensure the widest audience reach.
OUTCOMES
Grindstone designed and produced a report that was strongly aligned with the current visual style of the NDIS brand and allowed for improved readability. Building on the design work already undertaken for the NDIS by Grindstone, a colourful and icon driven layout was used to ensure the report presented key information in a way that was easy to engage with.
The narrative of the report followed the Scheme’s principals of Listening, Learning, Building and Delivering, whilst also highlighting the Agency’s people and key financials. Case studies were a feature of the report, highlighting real world applications of the Scheme’s features in the lives of the participants and providers that interact with it daily.
The online version of the site was developed using HTML5 on the WordPress platform. Key to the design was an adherence to WCAG 2.0 AA standards featuring full keyboard navigation and considered colour contrast for readability.
Another prominent feature of the site was the animated elements using the Scroll Magic and GreenSock Animation Platform (GSAP). The site is also fully responsive, has integrated social sharing and has optimised internal search as well increased indexing ability for search engines.
